Wilt Chamberlain History

A brief historical overview

Born on August 21, 1936, Wilton Norman Chamberlain did not care much for the game of basketball in the beginning, but at 7’1, he was a natural at the game.  He began playing basketball in the school sports program and was extremely successful at it.  So successful, the more than 200 universities attempted to lure him in.  After careful consideration, Wilt “the big dipper” Chamberlain began attending the University of Kansas where he played for the Kansas Jayhawks.  After a heart breaking experiences with the university team, Chamberlain decided it was time to move on and left the institute in 1958.

Because the NBA refused to accept Chamberlain for one year because of his incomplete university education, Wilt joined the Harlem Globetrotter in 1958.  Once his year was up, Wilt Chamberlain was catapulted into the NBA with the Philadelphia Warriors.  He was the highest paid player in the league at the time and he proved his worth.

Wilt played with an extremely dominate and aggressive style scoring most of the points for his team while fighting off two or three guards at a time.  On March 2, 1962, “the big dipper” made basketball history with his 100-point game against the New York Knicks.  In that season, Wilt Chamberlain also set the record for holding more than 4 000 points in a single season.

The Warriors were forced to move to San Francisco just before going bankrupt in 1968.  Chamberlain continued his professional career with the Philadelphia 76ers for three years, the Los Angeles Lakers until 1973, and ended his career in 1974 with the San Diego Conquistadors.

Besides his famous 100-point game, Wilt Chamberlain would win two NBA Championships, four NBA MVP titles, and be an NBA All-Star thirteen times.  His amazing natural talent put him in the list of one of the “50 Greatest Players in NBA History.”
